Grinding and Clenching

Grinding (also called bruxism) and clenching can cause an assortment of dental, muscular and joint problems. This is but a partial list:

  • Abnormal tooth wear
  • Gum recession
  • Cracking and fracture of teeth, crowns and fillings
  • Headaches
  • Stiff necks
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Blurred vision
  • TMJ (tempero-mandibular joint) pain and damage
  • Restless or interrupted sleep

Although many individuals clench their teeth during the day, grinding is normally a sleep time habit. As a result, it is difficult or impossible to prevent. Night-time appliances, often referred to as night-guards, will protect the teeth from stress and damage and often help curb the habit. These appliances are easily accommodated and the benefits can be dramatic.
